North Wales Hospital – Denbigh

The historic building of North Wales Hospital at Denbigh has a long and illustrious past. Built in 1846 the building is now owned by Denbigh Council and undergong extensive refurbishment following its’ closure announcement in 1987.

During the refurbishment process fruiting bodies (sporophores) belonging to the dry rot fungus (serpula lacrymans) were discovered on the skirting board in the central hall way. Further investigation uncovered additional outbreaks in isolated areas. The images below show the extent and severity of the outbreak which affected two carrier beams and associated floor joists, together with door frame and box window frame. The beams show cuboidal cracking damage as a result of the dry rot fungus.

To strengthen the floor structure we iinstalled steel plates and carried out sterilization treatments to remove the dry rot.
