Wet rots are similar to Dry rots in hat they are one of the most common causes of structural defects in properties. Wet rot thrives on attacking timber in damp conditions and if left untreated can cause much damage to the fabric of the property.
Wet rot is identifiable by the following: Damage to timber in the form of distortion, softness, cuboidal cracking and ultimately a loss of
strength in the timber. Wet rots also come with a musty, damp smell and there may also be some sign of fungal growth activity visible. The fungal growth, or hyphae strands, spread to find other damp areas to attack. Timber that has been subjected to a Wet rot attack appears either darkened or bleached with cuboidal or longitudinal cracks – the appearance is very much dependent upon the species of Wet rot. The species most commonly found in the UK is Coniophora puteana (otherwise known as Cellar Fungus)
Prior to Wet rot treatments been carried out a survey of the property would be done to determine the extent of the Wet rot problem. The survey will also identify where the moisture source which was feeding the Wet rot is, whether any other rot issues have arisen as a result of the Wet rot problem. Our surveyor will then be able to issue you with a report detailing the outbreak and detailing the most cost effective solution to the Wet rot outbreak. The solution to the Wet rot outbreak will be to stop the source of dampness / water ingress to remove the food source of the Wet rot. All weakened timbers are removed and replaced as well as HSE approved fungicidal treatments applied to any remaining timbers.
