The stages in a basement conversion

This image shows the dark, damp basement prior to any basement waterproofing taking place. Prior to cavity drain membrane been utilised to control the flow of water in the basement the room is completley stripped out. The brief from the client was to waterproof the room so that they could utilise the space for their family by creating a fabulous basement playroom.

The membraning process begins with an advanced cavity drainage membrane applied to the walls. The membrane used here has thermal properties to keep the heat in the basement. Cavity drainage membrane controls the flow of water coming down the walls. Any water will run down the back of the cavity drain membrane in to a perimeter drainage channel to collect the moisture and take any water to a convenient drain off point. This gives predictable results when waterproofing as any waterflow is ‘controlled’ as opposed to prevented. The cavity drainage membrane is fixed to the wall using special fixings and butyl rope to keep the watertight bond.

The walls are now fully membraned. The advantages of using a flexible cavity drain membrane are that it can easily go around and unusual features in the room whilst maintaing the waterproof bond. A stronger membrane is utilised on the floor so no moisture can come from beneath and spoil any floor coverings that may be in place in the finished basement. The cavity drainage membrane is now ready to be finished with plaster / plasterboard.
