We have gathered together a list of the most frequently asked questions that we get relating to basement waterproofing – if you have a question that isn’t answered here please feel free to “Ask our Expert” and we will be more than happy to help you.
Without knowing the the size and specification of the basement and what you are intending it to be used for it is impossible to answer! The best thing to do is contact you local Timberwise office on 0800 288 8660 and arrange for a survey of the basement from one of our waterproofing experts. We may then be able to provide you with a ball park costing on converting the basement which may help you decide if your project is viable or not.
In short the answer is no. A damp proof course is designed to prevent any moisture in the ground rising up into the walls of the building. It will not though prevent water ingress. Within a basement the main problem encountered is moisture under hydrostatic pressure from the surrounding ground area. Problems can range from patches of dampness on the walls through to running water. The preferred solution from Timberwise to this problem is to install a cavity drain membrane which will channel any moisture that is present into a perimeter drainage channel that runs along the edge of the basement before moving the water to a convenient drain off point via gravity or possible a sump pump unit.
The vast majority of basement conversions do not need planning permission as the external appearance of the building will not change. It is though likely that if any additional doors or windows are to be added that permission will be needed.
In most cases terraced houses can have their basement converted without it affecting neighbouring properties. Only when a survey has been undertaken though would we be able to advise if there would be any implications.
It is vital that any waterproofing installation is able to stand the test of time and provide good reliable service for many years to come. With the changes in climate, rising water tables and periods of heavy rainfall it is strongly recommended that sump pump units are included as part of the waterproofing solution.
When installed the pumps are beneath the basement floor which is usually then covered by carpet of flooring of some description. The units are designed to operate quietly yet remain effective.
As part of the guarantee on the waterproofing solution the sump pump system needs to be checked annually. This is to ensure that the system provides you with faithful service and keeps the basement dry. We recommend the Basement Sump and Pump Co who are experts in servicing basement pumps.
This is dependent on the site conditions. It may be possible to waterproof the existing steps if they are structurally sound.
It may be that there are certain elements of cabling and pipework that can be removed otherwise they can be hidden inside walls and ceilings.

We would suggest that you do your homework as best you can when choosing a contractor. Firstly check out the finances of the company you are looking at also check to see that they have professional indemnity and product liability insurance as this is another safeguard. If a business suffers a large claim and they aren’t protected with insurance, they could be forced out of business, whichwould then affect every single client holding a guarantee provided by that business! If they are protected by appropriate insurances they should remain in business and be able to uphold the guarantees. Another way by which you can protect yourself, is by checking that the business you are looking at using offers GPI (Guarantee Protection Insurance), which protects you in the event of the contractor ceasing to trade.
Timberwise would not have been operating in this specialist market for so long and with so much success if they weren’t good. We wont leave you in the lurch, and to ensure this, we are covered by the following:
Employers Liability insurance – protects employees whilst at work and on site
Level of cover: Yes – unlimited

Professional Indemnity – insures the advice/specification given to you. This is the most expensive insurance and as such not many contractors take it out (They say they can’t afford it). But it is most important to the client because it protects you! The chances are that a contractor without insurance will walk away if problems occur in the future. And then what do you do?
