The role of a Waterproofing Design Specialist

31 July 2019

When designing a waterproofing system for a basement there is one key document that needs to be adhered to – BS 8102 – The code of practice for protection of below ground structures against water from the ground.

What is BS8102:2009 and why is it so important?

The principles within the BS 8102 code of practice are fundamental to creating an integrated waterproofing solution. The code provides recommendations and guidance on the methods of dealing with and preventing, the entry of water from surrounding ground into the basement. An integral part of the code states that a Waterproofing Design Specialist needs to include in the design team.

This is specifically set out in Section 4.2 under the heading ‘Design Team’:

A waterproofing specialist should be included as part of the design team so that an integrated waterproofing solution is created

So, what exactly is a Waterproofing Design Specialist?

A Waterproofing Design Specialist is an individual that holds a PCA recognised Certificated Surveyor in Structural Waterproofing (CSSW) qualification. They must also meet stringent skills criteria before they can be a dedicated waterproofing professional and have the title Waterproofing Design Specialist.

As a Waterproofing Design Specialist, the individual will understand all the aspects of BS8102- 2009, waterproofing techniques and have a diagnostic and problem-solving approach. It is the responsibility of the Waterproofing Design Specialist to work closely beside architects, surveyors and contractors to a design a complaint waterproofing solution.

They attend regular site visits and investigations and produce comprehensive reports in relation to the design, ensuring at all stages that sufficient protection is designed into the project.

How can you benefit from working with a Waterproofing Design Specialist?

You stay compliant

If things go wrong on a large scale commercial waterproofing project and there are legal implications, the first thing the courts will look at is whether the waterproofing project complied with the relevant codes. By using a Waterproofing Design Specialist to work on the design of your waterproofing system you are choosing to use a dedicated waterproofing professional who will ensure that your waterproofing project is compliant with British Standard BS8102:2009.

You are not liable

By working with a Waterproofing Design Specialist as part of the design team, it is their responsibility to provide your team with guidance that assists and influences the design, installation and future maintenance of the waterproofed structure. It is the Waterproofing Design Specialist who takes on the design liability, not yourselves.

You are guaranteed

For your extra peace of mind, any specialist work carried out should be covered by a long-term guarantee meaning you are protected from inadequate works.
