Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the UK, so why haven’t you heard of it? It’s time to spread the word.

Today marks the end of Radon Awareness Week,  a week dedicated to informing the general public of one the leading causes of unexpected fatalities in the UK. But we don’t want to stop there, as property care specialists, we feel it our duty to make every homeowner in the UK aware of the dangers that radon can bring.

What Is Radon?

So, what is radon gas? Radon is a natural occurring noble gas formed as an indirect decay of uranium. We cannot see it, taste it or smell it, but it could be present in our homes.

Do I Live In A Radon Area?

The first time that many people hear about radon is when they are planning to either buy or sell property in a radon ‘affected area’. Every building contains radon to some extent, however, usually the becquerel levels tend to be low. Areas most commonly subjective to high concentrations of radon are; Cornwall, Devon, and areas of Scotland and Wales. For more information, why not check out our radon map.

If you live in one of the aforementioned areas, you may be asked to provide a radon report in the sale/purchase of your property. This report will require you to undertake a radon test, which fortunately for homeowners is simple to carry out.

Testing For Radon

At Timberwise, we can provide our customers with either a 90-day or 10-day test.  This involves placing radon detectors within frequently used living spaces in your home; such as your lounge or bedroom. Following the test period the radon detectors are returned to our testing facility in a heat-sealed bag which is provided as part of the test kit. The 10 day test provides a very good indication of the radon levels within the property. The 90 day kit provides a more accurate reading as the test period is longer.

Finally, you will receive a detailed report outlining the levels of radon concentration within your home.If radon levels are higher than the action level of 200 becquerels, our surveyors will advise on any remedial treatments that you may wish to take to lower the radon levels in your home as well as answering any further questions you may have.
