What is BS8102:2009 and why is it so important?
The principles within the BS 8102 code of practice are fundamental to creating an integrated waterproofing solution. The code provides recommendations and guidance on the methods of dealing with and preventing, the entry of water from surrounding ground into the basement. An integral part of the code states that a Waterproofing Design Specialist needs to include in the design team.
This is specifically set out in Section 4.2 under the heading ‘Design Team’:
“A waterproofing specialist should be included as part of the design team so that an integrated waterproofing solution is created”
So, what exactly is a Waterproofing Design Specialist?
A Waterproofing Design Specialist is an individual that holds a PCA recognised Certificated Surveyor in Structural Waterproofing (CSSW) qualification. They must also meet stringent skills criteria before they can be a dedicated waterproofing professional and have the title Waterproofing Design Specialist.
As a Waterproofing Design Specialist, the individual will understand all the aspects of BS8102- 2009, waterproofing techniques and have a diagnostic and problem-solving approach. It is the responsibility of the Waterproofing Design Specialist to work closely beside architects, surveyors and contractors to a design a complaint waterproofing solution.
They attend regular site visits and investigations and produce comprehensive reports in relation to the design, ensuring at all stages that sufficient protection is designed into the project.
