Structural Timber Repairs at a Grain Store in Immingham Docks | Port of Call for Preservation

Client: Associated British Ports (ABP)

In September 2024 construction began on a newly announced extension to the grain storage facility at Immingham Docks, expected to be finished in the summer of 2025. The project would add 40,000 tonnes to the existing capacity, bringing the total to over 80,000 tonnes.

The port’s inner dock is capable of housing vessels from 4000 to 27,500 tonnes.

Immingham port is located in North Lincolnshire and handles the largest volume of tonnage of any port in the UK. It plays an important role in supporting the UK’s supply chains with both imports and exports.

This large and vital commercial grain storage was damaged during a delivery. An articulated lorry delivering grain accidentally reversed into the facility, damaging a number of tall structural timbers.

Our team was called in to assess and form a plan to repair the damaged timbers.

Challenges

The main challenge our technicians faced was the sheer scale of the facility. They would need to work off of large scaffolding and handle massive section timbers, lifting them up and into position.

The timber sections that needed to be replaced also presented a potential obstacle. These structural timbers were curved, requiring additional considerations when designing, cutting and joining replacement timbers.

Solutions

The client erected a large, fixed scaffold specially designed for the project. Exact dimensions were taken of the sections that would need to be replaced and a TRS method was designed that would be suitable for the task, given the size and scale of the section timbers.

Results

The Timberwise team undertook the task with enthusiasm, relishing the challenge. The repair sections were shipped to the site and were installed successfully by our experienced joinery team. Our team overcame this challenging project and left the client extremely pleased with the results.
