Woodworm treatment in a mill conversion
Set in the north side of the River Nidd, Glasshouses Mill, a former flax mill, is now an abandoned Grade II listed building. With an established presence in the region and decades of experience in the treatment of timber, Timberwise were called out to inspect for suspected woodworm before the mill was to be converted into modern homes.
Woodworm thrives in extreme damp conditions especially where there is timber decay. Abandoned for some time and exposed to the elements Glasshouses Mill made the perfect home. An active infestation of wood boring weevils was discovered by our timber specialist in all timbers on the ground, first and second floor as well as the roof timbers.
Woodworm is the widely used generic term for wood boring insects. These insects attack wood and can cause structural damage to timbers if left unchecked.
A tailored report had been compiled following the survey, Timberwise recommended a full insecticidal spray treatment, killing the eggs, larvae and adult beetles in all exposed timbers.
As the property was under full conversion all external defects were already rectified prior to Timberwise’s arrival such as the roof detail, gutters and down pipes.
All painted timbers were sand blasted prior to treatment, all floor coverings were removed to allow access to the floor boards and ceilings were removed to allow treatment to the joists. Luckily for the client, there was no severe damage which meant no timber had to be cut away or removed.
The recommended treatment to the timbers will prevent the development of any further eggs and with the final emergence of beetles the treatment becomes completely effective therefore, the infestation will eventually die out.
The client was then left with a “blank canvas” free from woodworm, ready to continue on the re-development of the property and surrounding areas into apartments and townhouses. All Timberwise works were carried out on a weekend to minimise site disruption through the week.
With the Timberwise long term timber guarantee covering the work the client, as well as their customers, will have complete peace of mind that the property is cared for long after the development is complete.
