Common Damp Problems We Find in Liverpool

There are three common damp problems in Liverpool homes: rising damp, penetrating damp, and condensation. The first, rising damp, happens when ground-level water rises through the walls of your property, causing rot in structural timbers and cosmetic damage.

Penetrating damp, on the other hand, happens when damage to the outside of your property lets water penetrate your walls. Some common causes include cracked or degraded bricks, damaged gutters, leaky roofing, or damaged door or window frames. Finally, condensation happens when your property is poorly ventilated, something common in older homes in Merseyside.

The most common symptoms of damp that homeowners notice are cosmetic damage to walls, a persistent damp or musty smell, and the development of rot or black mould.

    Why Correct Damp Diagnosis Matters

When resolving damp problems in your property, it’s important to treat the source to avoid long-term damage to timber and plaster. If the cause of damp is misidentified, persistent moisture can lead to the growth of black mould, dry and wet rot, woodworm, and cosmetic or structural damage.

A professional damp survey will assess the causes and types of damp in your property, ensuring that any treatments recommended will solve the problem quickly. Timberwise surveyors will conduct expert analysis and clarify their findings in your survey report, before recommending targeted treatments with no obligation to continue work.

Our Damp Survey Process in Liverpool

During your damp survey, our PCA-accredited surveyor will make a number of assessments to diagnose the type of damp present in your property.

They will check moisture and salt levels in the problem area, see whether damp proof coursing (DPC) has been applied, and assess common problem areas that could be letting excess water into your home. They will also record humidity levels, review your property’s ventilation, and record whether there is any black mould present.

After your survey, you will receive a clear and honest written report of their findings, spelling out the problems in plain English and recommending solutions with a no-obligation quotation for work.

    Damp Problems FAQs

How do I know if I have rising damp or condensation?

Rising damp affects ground-floor walls and often causes tide marks, crumbling plaster, or salt deposits near skirting boards. Condensation is caused by excess moisture in the air and usually appears as mould growth or water droplets on cold surfaces.

Because the symptoms can overlap, a professional damp survey is the most reliable way to confirm the cause in a Liverpool property.

How Long Does a Damp Survey Take?

A damp survey typically takes between one and four hours, depending on the size and condition of the property.

The survey involves inspecting affected areas, measuring moisture levels, and identifying the underlying cause of damp.
